A comprehensive guide to literacy teaching by Lire et Ecrire, Brussels.

For this guide we developed the concept of an A-Z to give useful and wide-ranging instructions without being too full of rules, there are spaces designated for note taking to invite interaction. The choice of particular papers, die cutting and rounded corners enhances the impression of a supple school notebook.

The SBPA trains Jungian psychologists and runs creative seminars and workshops to widen Jungian practices.
The logo and the leaflet are inspired by the organic feel within Jungian philosophy. The leaflet opens from a postcard format through to a poster, presenting the annual programme of events.

PAN-Europe is a network working to change legislation and highlight the problems associated with pesticides.

With this report we wanted to give an equal place to people and activities on this subject. The report presents two different stories that work in parallel. The left hand pages provide different quotes, from the Pope to a retired policeman, whilst the right pages detail the year's activities. Visually this makes for a brochure that can be more engaging and easy to dip into. The coloured spots identify the different themes. Their irregular positioning are like wildflowers popping up unexpectedly.

Concept and identity for a new gallery and artists space. Creation of a bespoke typeface to capture texts, rather than read them. Based on photographic medium, albeit not exclusively.

Teaching material covering 10 different themes around the subject of living together. 

The multiple elements we developed include a board game with accompanying sets of cards, posters, flashcards and postcards, a memory stick and 2 teacher guide books. These elements are organised within a bespoke cardboard suitcase/box and envelopes/folders, contained in an large felt travel bag. 

The graphic style uses stickers, travel tags and familiar materials such as plain brown cardboard and a background motif of another era, to  encourage familiarity and homeliness. In this environment the graphics that come together from a wide range of sources, are harmonised with a strong palette of colours and logo labels.

Le Cairn is a neighborhood street school providing services for the last 35 years to a very local population.
We created a new logo, with an in-house identity guide and templates, for use across the various communication needs. Backpacks/bags were made locally and ethically from shirts with a local atelier/printers.

This book was developed during a two-year class on adult literacy skills for Lire et Ecrire Bernissart.

The concept for the cover of this book was to present the authors as stars, with their name up in lights so to speak, and at the same time the oversized letters imply close attention, as if typing on a keyboard for the first time. The title, intimate and warm, is placed on an ancient ex-libris. The format of the book is based on an imperial book size using weighty pages and a square binding. The warm and quirky collection of illustrations by Thomas Corbisier, adds a tenderness and humanity to the book, allowing the simple and individual personality of the texts to come through.

Full front and back flaps create double pages for an introduction to the project and photos of the layout as produced by the class.

An exhibition of case studies explaining Integrated Pest Management for PAN-Europe.

This exhibition of eleven, one-metre square aluminium panels has been touring the EU parliament, various EU departments and European institutions. 

The repeat patterns with a series of tailor-made icons were developed to visually explain the alternative techniques of IPM. The use of bright, positive colours draw people into an accessible understanding of the complex and important issues.

The exhibition was accompanied by an explanatory pamphlet and a detachable “paper bag” flyer.

LEE 3e Festival Art & Alpha. Brochure & festival Identity

I was commissioned to produce a case-studies brochure,  for Eur-Alpha, a cross-European Network with a manifesto, charter & DVD.

The typographical illustration linking the various publications, is developed out of the words 'read and write' in many languages and typefaces. This work was developed with the interaction and intervention of literacy groups.

Low impact farming highlights a campaign promoting alternative farming techniques. The design uses a pattern of tiles to present reports, interviews, legislation, exhibitions and other campaign material in a unified way. Giving a visual summary of each page’s content. The logo is firmly centred on the soil. Using hand-drawn crops to contrast with the rigidity of colour bands, implying both strength and fragility.

The pesticide free towns responsive website with its wide and in-depth content has been developed in multiple languages. The colour palette, graphic forms and typography have been selected to encourage and exploit the diverse content of films, reports, statistics and interactive maps across different templates.
The easily-recognised logo lends itself to multiple languages. Its modular, hexagon shape is used as a graphic element as well as a stand-alone logo, accompanied here by stickers and conference material.

Art
A pocket sized folder with mini cards and a map for a sculpture festival in Ath. The town becomes a backdrop for a series of large sculptures during the festival. The logo has been widely distributed in print and other media and reissued for subsequent festivals and events.

Wine
We produced this folder for a wine distributor, hosting art-based events and bringing people together around wine in a multi-purpose event space in the Ardennes.

Teeth
This well established dental practice in Sussex wanted to update their image and to introduce a new name for the practice.

Forest Quartier Sante is a non-profit organisation, working to promote better health and increase awareness of health issues in the local community of Forest.

I was commissioned to produce a series of leaflets on common problems found in the home. Each one is distinguished by a different wallpaper, as if being inside the various rooms of a house.

The logo was developed to situate the organisation as positive and practical whilst being specialised and local. The staircase adds to an impression of improvement, through guided steps.

An on-going quarterly journal produced for Lire et Ecrire.

The collection of long articles are separated through visual page breaks, typographic, illustrative, photographic or a combination to create breathing space. They tell a story related to the overall topic of the journal, often an extension of the cover.

I was asked to develop different brochures and a series of pamphlets for the Anderlecht tourist office. 

In the brochures, details are juxtaposed in a grid or mosaic layout. This creates intrigue and leaves room for flexibility in the layout of the text, enabling more variety across the different sections. The series of pamphlets, dealing with specific themes, act as an ensemble with a strong unity seen across the cover designs, and a classical layout that gives prominence to the photos. 

Accompanying material includes a tri-lingual, eleven-metre frieze celebrating the millennia of the Collegiate church, highlighting and explaining different artworks and stories within.

I have been invited to collaborate with Swallowsfeet on material for their last three dance festivals, held in Brighton by a young and dynamic collective. The festival encompasses a core weekend of dance performances by different international companies in a theatre, accompanied by offshoot activities like workshops and exhibitions.

“Là-bas d'ici” is a historical overview looking at Moroccan migration to Belgium developed into an educational pack containing a DVD, book and fact sheets.

The concept of the pack is to confront the reader with a situation where there are no words, and then few but in an unrecognisable language. Only after 2 or 3 pages does the text become familiar. This quickly gives way to a simple structure for reading, albeit with graphic marks and patterning that gently allude to a different cultural view-point.
